Good morning. Today is the birth anniversary (1933) of James Brown, million-selling soul singer of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Brown, known as the “godfather of soul” and the “hardest-working man in show business,” was a spectacular dancer and showman, known for his outlandish costumes and high-energy performances. He died on Dec. 25, 2006, in Atlanta.

Well-known people who were born today include TV personality Greg Gumbel, singer Engelbert Humperdinck, folk singer Pete Seeger (“Where Have All the Flowers Gone”), singer Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons (“Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry”) and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).
