Good afternoon. Today is the 142nd day of the year. On this day in 1850, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on the 20th anniversary ceremonies of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union, an organization of Sunday schools representing various Christian denominations. The article described boys and girls wearing colorful costumes and carrying banners. Some of these banners showed Biblical scenes, while others, designed for younger children, merely showed wreaths and flowers. All in all, about 7,000 adults and children participated in the parade. The ceremonies ended at the Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn Heights.

Well-known people who were born today include French singer Charles Aznavour, model Naomi Campbell, former baseball player Tommy John, actor Richard Benjamin (“Goodbye Columbus,” “Diary of a Mad Housewife”), Brooklyn-born conductor Peter Nero and author Garry Wills.
