Good morning. Today is the 137th day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that Coney Island’s police force had been increased by 31 more officers in order to deal with the huge crowds. To help serve the crowds, “The trolley cars were all out of the barns and have been moved to side tracks where they can be put into service at a moment’s notice,” the Eagle reported. Among the new attractions for that season were a coal mine “1,000 feet deep,” several “living mermaids,” and a re-enactment of the Johnston Flood. Of course, other “attractions” at Coney Island in those days included pickpockets, three-card monte dealers, prostitutes and illegal gambling emporiums.

Well-known people who were born today included Hall of Fame soccer player Mia Hamm, singer Trent Reznor, former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, actress Debra Winger and comedian Craig Ferguson.
