Good morning. Today is the 68th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for March 8, 1901, reported on a heroic effort by nurses to put out a fire in the now-defunct Eastern District Hospital. The nurses threw buckets of water on the blaze, slowing it down until the firemen arrived. In those days, firefighters still traveled in horse-drawn fire engines, and took longer to respond to fires. The fire was traced to the room of one nurse, who had left her room temporarily, but an investigation determined that there had been no fire there before she left.

As for Eastern District Hospital, it was located between Berry Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, which was considered to be part of the “Eastern District” even though it is at the borough’s western edge. The hospital later consolidated with the nearby Williamsburg Hospital and vacated the building, which was converted into an apartment house during the 1920s.

Well-known people who were born today include model Kathy Ireland, actor Freddie Prinze Jr., singer-songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, actor-singer Mickely Dolenz of the Monkees, Hall of Fame baseball player Jim Rice and actress Susan Clark (“Webster”).
