Good morning. Today is the 81st day of the year. On this day in 1906, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that the city’s Rapid Transit Commission had approved an extension of what was known as the “Fort Hamilton Line” (today’s R train) to Coney Island.
The original plans called for the line to go down Fourth Avenue, then east on 86th Street and from there to Coney. But it was never to be. Instead, two already-existing rail lines, the West End Line (today’s D train) and the Sea Beach Line (today’s N train) were rebuilt and connected to the Fourth Avenue trunk line at 36th Street and 59th Street, respectively.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-guitarist George Benson (“Give Me the Night,” “This Masquerade”), composer Andrew Lloyd Weber (“Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Jesus Christ Superstar”), actor Matthew Modine (“Full Metal Jacket”), actor William Shatner (“Star Trek,” “Boston Legal”), composer Stephen Sondheim (“A Little Night Music”) and TV evangelist Pat Robertson.
