Brooklyn Today for March 11
Good morning. Today is the 70th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle on March 11, 1902, reported on the sad news that the body of a 60-year-old man who had been “knocked into the Hackensack River” in New Jersey by a streetcar was that of Patrick J. Kenny of Concord Street, Brooklyn.
Kenny’s daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Downes, had reported Kenny missing in early January. A witness reported that he had been standing on the trolley tracks, which implied that he had taken his own life. Even so, Mrs. Downes was preparing to bring a lawsuit against the streetcar company.
Well-known people who were born today include basketball player Elton Brand, actor Terrence Howard (“Iron Man”), actress Alex Kingston (“ER”), jazz musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”), media executive Rupert Murdoch and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
