A RELEASE OF “WHAT IS VISIBLE” will take place 7 p.m. tonight at BookCourt.  The release includes a reading, Q&A session and book signing with author Kimberly Elkins.  This is Elkins’ first novel and focuses on character Laura Bridgman, who lost four of her five senses to scarlet fever.

OUTDOOR STRENGTH, an aerobic and strength training class, will take place at the Pier 6 Promenade 7:30 p.m. tonight.  This class is set to meet every Monday at this time and place through June, July and August.  The meeting spot at Pier 6 is by the volleyball courts.  

A JC GRAPHIC NOVELS BOOK GROUP will be discussing 100 Bullets Vol. 1 tonight at 6 p.m. at WORD Bookstore.  Brian Azzarello’s novel is available at WORD.  

A SENIOR FITNESS class bill takes place 10 a.m. today at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 Promenade.  These classes will focus on cardio dance and range of movement workouts and will continue at this time and place throughout the month of June.

TODAY IS DONALD DUCK’S 80TH BIRTHDAY.  His first debut was on this date in 1934 with the release of Disney’s “The Wise Little Hen.”

NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST Charles Loloma was born on this date in 1921.  Loloma was famous for changing the look of American Indian jewelry.  He was a painter, sculptor and potter as well.  He was born in the Hopi Indian Reservation and died in 1991 in Arizona.

AMERICAN MUSICIAN Les Paul, who designed one of the first solid-body electric guitars, was born on this date in 1915.  Paul made groundbreaking contributions with guitar effects and recording techniques.  He died in 2009 at the age of 94 – he was a musician up until his 90s.

TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF NATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE PROFESSIONALS WEEK.  This week, from June 9-15, is sponsored by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, was founded to improve the quality of automotive service through education and certification of service professionals.

AMERICAN AUTHOR, ACTOR AND DIPLOMAT JOHN HOWARD PAYNE was born on this date in 1791 in New York City.  Payne was author of opera libretto “Clari,” which contained the song “Home, Sweet Home.”

ON THIS DATE IN 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled: “Big Police Shakeup; Seven New Captains.”  The article focuses on the most significant police “shakeup” in New York City that took place on that morning.  The commissioner at the time, Partridge, transferred four inspectors, 22 captains and eight sergeants – seven of the captains being new men.  
“Commissioner Partridge refused to make any comment on the transfers,” the article wrote.  “An Eagle reporter endeavored to get from the Commissioner a statement as to his reasons for transferring Captain O’Reilly to Manhattan…”
