Brooklyn Today: June 5, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 157th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of June 5, 1902, had a story about the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR’s) plans to put its street-level rail line from East New York to Bay Ridge below ground to avoid dangerous grade crossings. The line, known as the Bay Ridge Freight Line, has traveled through an open “trench” since around 1910 and still carries freight across the borough, although passenger service ended in the 1920s.
Well-known people who were born today include singer Brian McKnight, actor Mark Wahlberg (“Boogie Knights,” “The Departed”), Second Lady Jill Biden and author Ken Follett (“The Eye of the Needle”).
