Brooklyn Today for June 26
Good morning. Today is the 177th day of the year. On this day in 1901, four large Brooklyn department stores – Frederick Loeser, Journeay & Burnham, Abraham & Straus (today’s Macy’s on Fulton Street) and D. Matthews’ Sons, signed an agreement to close their stores at 7 p.m. during the Christmas season. The stores’ managers felt that their workers should not be overworked. They also believed an earlier closing would induce customers to buy their presents earlier, rather than wait until the last minute.
Well-known people who were born today include singer-musician Chris Isaak, baseball player Derek Jeter, sportscaster and Hall of Fame football player Shannon Sharpe and author Charlotte Zolotow.
