Brooklyn Today: June 13, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 165th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle’s issue of June 13, 1902, reported that the city was tearing up the tracks of an unused trolley line on Humboldt Street that had been operated by the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. The line, in northern Brooklyn, had terminated at Penny Bridge, near the malodorous and ultra-polluted Newtown Creek. Even then, few people wanted to go there.
Well-known people who were born today include actor Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”), actor Richard Thomas (“The Waltons”), actress Ally Sheedy (“St. Elmo’s Fire,” “The Breakfast Club”) and U.N. Secretary Genral Ban Ki-Moon.
