WORLD WAR I began on this day in 1914, marking this year as the 100th anniversary of the war.  Austria and Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28.  Within weeks, Germany, Russia, France and Great Britain entered the war as well.

 

HUGO CHAVEZ was born on this day in 1954.  Chavez was president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013.  As president, Chavez instituted a program of economic centralization and increased military strength.  He was the principal antagonist of the U.S. in the Western Hemisphere, repeatedly taunting U.S. leaders in his public statement.  

 

TODAY IS PERU’S INDEPENDENCE DAY.  San Martin declared independence from Spain on this day in 1821.  

 

AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR Beatrix Potter was born on this day in 1866.  Potter wrote and illustrated the Peter Rabbit children’s stories.  She died in 1943.  

 

EVENTS AT BROOKLYN Bridge Park include an Early Morning Yoga class, Studio in a School and Senior Fitness.  The Early Morning Yoga class will take place at the Pier 6 lawns at 7:30 a.m.  The Studio in a School event, which is a morning drawing and collaging class for 5- to 12-year-olds, will take place at the Pier 2 Promenade at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  The Outdoor Strength class will take place at the Pier 6 Promenade at 7:30 p.m.  

GLENN KENNY and Dan Callahan will join in conversation regarding “Robert DeNiro: Anatomy of an Actor” at BookCourt at 7 p.m.  The event is a release party, reading, audience Q&A and book signing.  

 

ON THIS DAY in 1906, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Big Railroad Terminal Planned for Wallabout.”  The article focused on a union railroad terminal being planned at the time.  “Definite plans for a large union railroad terminal to handle the produce distributed in Wallabout Market are being rapidly formulated by the merchants of the market,” the article reported.
