Good morning. Today is the 207th day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Bridge, which had been closed for several days after several of its suspender cables snapped, reopened after round-the-clock repairs. It opened to horse-drawn traffic and a very small number of automobiles early in the morning, then to trolley cars several hours later, and finally to elevated trains in the evening. C.C. Martin, the chief engineer of the bridge, issued a report that the extreme heat, coupled with minor cracks that had gone unrepaired for years, had caused the problem.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Susan George, singer Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones (“Satisfaction,” “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up”), actor Kevin Spacey (“American Beauty,” “The Usual Suspects,” “Lost in Yonkers”) and actor Jeremy Piven.
