Good morning. Today is the second day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Jan. 2, 1898, carried an article called “Some Local Libraries,” which listed institutions where books could be borrowed either for free or for a small fee. At that point, the Brooklyn Public Library system as we know it today was still in the formative stages. The article lists the library of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (today’s Brooklyn Museum), the Pratt Institute Free Library, the Brooklyn Library on Montague Street, the YMCA Library at 502 Fulton St. and the library of the Long Island Historical Society (now known as the Brooklyn Historical Society) on Pierrepont Street.

Well-known people who were born today include Cuba Gooding Jr. (“Boyz n Da Hood,” “Gladiator”), former baseball pitcher David Cone, Brooklyn-born actress Wendy Phillips (“Airplane II,” “Bugsy”) and televangelist Jim Bakker.
