Good morning. Today is the 31st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Jan. 31, 1908, carried an article on a “run” on the Oriental Bank in Manhattan, which had two branches, despite the bank president’s protest that the bank was solvent. Bank deposits have been insured since the mid-1930s, but beforehand, even a rumor that a bank could be closing could trigger panic. Depositors would withdraw money because they feared that their deposits would be lost. Then, the bank would be left with almost no money and would be forced to close.

Well-known people who were born today include Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, actress Carroll Channing (“Mame,” “Hello Dolly”), singer John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) of the Sex Pistols (“God Save the Queen”), actress Kelly Lynch (“Drugstore Cowboy”) and singer-actor Justin Timberlake (“Black Snake Moan,” “Alpha Dog”).
