Good morning. Today is the 27th day of the year. People complain today about the construction of the Second Avenue subway in Manhattan, but 110 years ago or so it was much worse. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Jan. 27, 1902, reported an explosion during the construction of the Lexington Avenue subway a few blocks south of Grand Central that shattered windows for several miles around, injured several people and killed five. The most unusual death was of a man staying on the 34th floor of a nearby hotel. Several wooden planks and stones crashed through his window, killing him.

Well-known people who were born today include former TV talk show host Keith Olberman, actress Mimi Rogers, actress Bridget Fonda (“Single White Female,” “Lake Placid”), Irish pacifist Mairead Corrigan Maguire and ballet dancer-actor Mikhail Baryshnikov (“White Nights”).
