Good morning. Today is the 20th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Jan. 20, 1889, carried an article about a congressional committee contemplating “Extra Bars to Check the Growing Immigration Rush.” The committee recommended excluding anyone who was insane, a pauper, likely to become a public charge, who had been convicted of a felony, or was a socialist or anarchist. The committee also recommended more immigration inspectors, and complained that too many “insane persons and paupers” were coming into the U.S. by way of Canada.

Well-known people who were born today include comedian Arte Johnson (“Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In); director David Lynch (“Twin Peaks,” “Blue Velvet”), TV host Bill Maher (“Real Time With Bill Maher”), country singer Slim Whitman and former astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.
