Good morning. Today is the second day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Jan. 2, 1900, reported that “stray bullets were fired recklessly around Brooklyn on New Year’s Eve.” Two incidents were reported in which shots were fired through the front windows of houses on Atlantic Avenue and on Sterling Place. One of the bullets, from a .38 caliber weapon, bounced off the back of a chair and then struck the arm of an elderly man who was seated nearby.

At that time, Brooklyn had only recently joined New York City and given up its separate identity.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Cuba Gooding Jr. (“As Good as It Gets”), former Met pitcher David Cone, hockey player Brian Boucher, former TV evangelist Jim Bakker and former baseball player Edgar Martinez.
