Good morning. Today is the 38th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Feb. 7, 1877, reported on a burglar who managed to enter a house on Orange Street in Brooklyn Heights and got away with about $900 worth of jewelry and diamonds.

When one of the residents heard noises coming from a second-floor room, he went outside to summon a policeman, but saw the thief jump onto the street and run away.

He and members of the family gave chase, but the thief soon faded away into the darkness. Interestingly, at one time, burglars were known as “second-story men,” because people’s bedrooms, where they kept their valuables, tended to be on the second floor of private houses.
