Good morning. Today is the 54th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Feb. 23, 1901, carried an article about a gun-and-knife fight between several Italian immigrants that had grown out of a card game in a house on Navy Street. Two men, according to the Eagle, exchanged blows, and then they parted. But an hour later, three other men came to the house and pulled out their weapons.

Soon, according to the Eagle, a crowd of over 100 people had gathered around the house. Four police officers were able to enter and prevent one man from bleeding to death. Navy Street was a rough area in those days – Al Capone grew up there until his family moved to Garfield Street when he was around 10.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Peter Fonda (“Easy Rider,” “Ulee’s Gold”), rock singer-guitarist Johnny Winter (“Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo”), former baseball player Bobby Bonilla, and former football player and boxer Edward “Too Tall” Jones.
