Good morning. Today is the 354th day of the year. In 1902, teachers’ strikes were almost unheard of, but on Dec. 19 of that year, teachers at Brownsville’s P.S. 66 went on strike to protest the prevalence of coal and sewer gases at the “unhealthiest school in Brooklyn.” Teachers complained of headaches, upset stomachs, nosebleeds and other ailments. The article went on to say that representatives of the city Board of Health had visited the school and blamed the teachers’ ailments on gases.

Well-known people who were born today include Hall of Fame basketball player Kevin McHale, actress Cicely Tyson (“Sounder,” “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman”), anthropologist Richard Leakey and actress Jennifer Beals (“Flashdance”).
