Good morning. Today is the 234th day of the year.

On this day in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that the Long Island Rail Road planned to build a new trolley line from Greenpoint to Canarsie, replacing a little-used steam railroad line along the same route. At the time, electric trolleys were an up-and-coming mode of transportation, while local steam railway routes were on their way out or were in the process of being converted to subway and elevated lines. Canarsie was a summer beach destination for many Brooklynites, although it didn’t have the rides and other attractions of Coney Island.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Valerie Harper (“Rhoda”), Hall of Fame baseball player Carl Yastrzemski, retired general Norman Schwarzkopf and television journalist Steve Kroft (“60 Minutes”).
