Good morning. Today is the 230th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 17, 1902, reported on a target-shooting match between the Brooklyn Naval Battalion, based at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the Manhattan Naval Battalion. The contest was visible from both Coney Island and the Rockaways.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Gos, actor Robert De Niro (“Ranging Bull,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Deer Hunter”), actress Maureen O’Hara (‘Miracle on 33th Street,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”) and actor Sean Penn (“Mystic River,” “Milk”).
