Good morning. Today is the 116th day of the year. On this day in 1967, Colorado became the first state to legalize abortion. The law allowed therapeutic abortions in cases in which a three-doctor panel unanimously agreed.

Well-known people who were born today include Hall of Fame basketball player Meadow George “Meadowlark” Lemon, Brooklyn-born director Paul Mazursky (Harry and Tonto, An Unmarried Woman), actor Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman, Dog Day Afternoon) and actress Renée Zellweger (Cold Mountain, Miss Potter, Chicago).

In The New York Times, writer Michael Powell remembers his life as a teenage gang member and high school dropout, and how Bushwick Community High School helped to turn him around. He quotes several other former students who believed this “last-chance place for last-chance kids” saved their lives, and laments the fact that the city’s Department of Education may lay off the principal and many of the teachers tomorrow night.

According to the Albany Times-Union, two Brooklyn men who were driving up the New York State Thruway were caught with a cache of cocaine and heroin this week. After stopping Mykell Miller and Rasheen Parnell for speeding, troops said they found 71 grams of powdered cocaine, 77 grams of crack cocaine and 350 bags of heroin in the trunk of their car. Police also said that license plates from another car were on their car, and that the duo gave phony names.
