Good morning. Today is the 102nd day of the year. On this day in 1983, Harold Washington was elected the first black mayor of Chicago. Of the city’s 1.6 million voters, a record 82 percent voted. Washington won 51 percent of the votes, which split alongracial lines.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Louise Lasser (“Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”), actor Joel Grey (Cabaret, The Seven Percent Solution), former baseball player Bert Saberhagen and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Ellen Goodman.
