Brooklyn man convicted of murdering 19-month-old girl
A Brooklyn man who was accused of beating his girlfriend’s 19-month-old daughter has been found guilty of murder.
The Queens district attorney’s office says Allen Shannon of Brooklyn was convicted Thursday after a four-week trial.
Prosecutors say the girlfriend left the toddler, Anniyah Levant, with Shannon when she went to work an overnight shift on March 24, 2010. They say he called her a few hours later, saying something was wrong with the little girl.
The mother took her to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the girl died. The medical examiner said she had suffered a brain injury, a broken jaw, broken ribs, a lacerated liver and other internal injuries.
Defense attorney John Scarpa said Friday he believes the mother killed the girl. She was not charged.
