NEW YORK (AP) — A Brooklyn firefighter who was badly injured when he was trapped in a burning building has left the hospital where he's spent the last three months.

NBC New York says Robert Wiedmann suffered burns on more than 50 percent of his body during the Dec. 19 brownstone fire in Crown Heights.

His family and co-workers cheered as he left the Manhattan hospital on Friday. Wiedmann called it an "emotional day."

Dr. Roger Yurt says it took "fortitude" for Wiedmann to endure the long hospital stay, which included 10 operations. The doctor says the firefighter has even more recovery ahead of him.

Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano says Wiedmann's perseverance has inspired the entire the department.
