Good morning. Today is the 241st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 29, 1901, shows that although people nowadays think of trolleys with nostalgia, they were also dangerous. The article reported that nearly a dozen people were injured, one critically, when two trolley cars collided on Fulton Street near Borough Hall (probably on a part of the street that was eliminated during the Cadman-area renovation of the 1950s). No one could explain why a switch that should have been closed was left open.

Well-known people who were born today include Brooklyn-born actor Elliott Gould (“M*A*S*H*,” “The Long Goodbye”), actor Richard Gere (“Chicago,” “An Officer and a Gentleman”), choreographer-dancer Mark Morris and TV host Robin Leach (“Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”).
