Brooklyn Daily Eagle for August 26
Good morning. Today is the 238th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Aug. 26, 1870, reported that John Kelly, owner of the Brooklyn Hotel in San Francisco, planned to visit his old haunts in Brooklyn. The Eagle added that Kelly left Brooklyn in 1849, at the height of the California Gold Rush, to seek his fortune on the West Coast. This was the first time he was going back East in more than 20 years. In those days, it took at least four days to travel by rail from New York to San Francisco.
