The heavy stone facade of the walkway to the Brooklyn Bridge, under the overpass at Washington and Prospect streets in DUMBO, collapsed at roughly 7:40 p.m. Wednesday night in Brooklyn.

The collapse, which injured five pedestrians, took place in the middle of a wild storm which brought hundreds of explosive lightening strikes and flooding to the area.

The report came in to 9-1-1 at 7:42 p.m.

An FDNY spokesperson told the Brooklyn Eagle at 8:35 p.m. that emergency medical technicans were evaluating the injured, but the injuries did not appeear to be life-threatening. The facade has “substantial weight,” the spokesperson said.

UPDATE: The victims were treated for minor injuries at Bellevue Hospital Center, four miles away in Manhattan.

When the facade first collapsed it was unclear how many people were under the rubble.  Numerous rescue units were called to the scene and Cadman Plaza West was blocked to traffic.

The entire area has been cordoned off. The Office  of Emergency Management and the Department of Buildings are investigating.
