Good morning, Brooklyn.  Today is the 206th day of the year.  

 

NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include journalist Midge Decter, who was born in 1927; “Message in a Bottle” actress Illeana Douglas, who was born in 1965; model and actress Iman, who was born in 1955; “One Tree Hill” actor James Lafferty, who was born in 1985; “Friends” actor Matt LeBlanc, who was born in 1967; hockey player Evgeni Nabakov, who was born in 1975; and Hall of Fame basketball player Nathaniel “Nate” Thurmond, who was born in 1941.  

 

THE ANDREA DORIA liner sank on this day in 1956.  The Italian luxury liner collided with Stockholm, a Swedish liner, on its way to New York.  About 1,634 people were rescued from the ordeal.

 

TODAY IS SAINT James Day.  This holiday is meant to commemorate the patron saint of Spain.  

 

TODAY IS THE BIRTH anniversary of the test tube baby.  Louise Brown was the first documented birth of a baby conceived outside of the body of a woman.  She was born in 1978.  

 

“IF YOU’RE READING THIS, There’s Still Time” by Jacqueline Morley will launch at WORD Bookstore tonight at 7 p.m.  Morley is a Los Angeles based street artist.     

EVENTS AT Brooklyn Bridge Park include a Pier 5 Family Field Day, Baylander Tours and a Wildlife Theater event.  The Pier 5 Family Day will take place at the sports fields from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.  Free Baylander tours will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pier 5 Promenade.  Lastly, the Wildlife Theater event will feature Central Park Zoo wildlife at the Pier 6 lawn Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

 

ON THIS DAY in 1909, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Phone Regulation is Seen to be Coming.” The article focused on a merge of Bell Companies that was planned at the time.

“The banking community has been disposed to grin at the statement of the American Telephone management that the object it had in view in acquiring additional stocks of the operating companies was to secure greater efficiency and economy of operation,” the article reported.
