Alumnus is new Jewish chaplain at LIU Brooklyn

An alumnus of LIU Brooklyn has been named as its newest college chaplain.

Rabbi Josh Tabi, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from LIU Brooklyn, begins working as a chaplain at his college alma mater this semester. He joins Father Charles P. Keeney, the Roman Catholic chaplain on Downtown campus, at Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue.

Rabbi Tabi, 31, is already very familiar with the LIU Brooklyn community. He earned his a bachelor of arts in psychology, with a minor in philosophy, magna cum laude, in 2009. Last year, he earned his master of science in education degree. During his student years, Tabi was president of the Jewish Club of LIU.

“Being an alumnus has given me insight into the hardships many students face on the path to receiving a degree. I hope to make life on campus easier for them,” he said.

Tabi trained in Jerusalem, Israel, from 2001 to 2003 at Ohr Somayach, where he focused on Torah and philosophy; and at Mir Yershalayim, where he studied the Talmud.

His volunteer work in Brooklyn has been with youth-at-risk at Our Place, serving as a counselor since 2006; and at Friday Night Chill, where he has served as director since 2009. Both of these organizations are under the guidance of Rabbi Solomon Herbst, who ordained Tabi to the rabbinate.

A Borough Park resident, Tabi works for the Jewish Leadership Association, an organization that places rabbis in various settings. His professional affiliations include the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, the New York Mental Health Counselors Association, and the American Counseling Association.

Tabi plans a series of Jewish education lectures, trips to Israel and field trips, including a visit to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.  He will be conducting daily prayer services and offer counseling to those of all faiths on the LIU Brooklyn.
