THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM WAS FOUGHT ON THIS DAY IN 1862. This date has been called America’s bloodiest day in recognition of the high casualties suffered in the Civil War battle between Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces and Gen. George McClellan’s Union army. Estimates vary, but more than 25,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed or wounded in this battle on the banks of the Potomac River in Maryland.

HANK WILLIAMS SR. WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1923. Hiram King Williams, country singer, achieved his first hit with “Lovesick Blues,” which brought him a contract with the Grand Ole Opry. His hits include “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Honky Tonk Blues,” “Jambalaya,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Take These Chains from My Heart” and “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive,” which was released prior to his death in 1953 in Virginia.

THE U.S. CONSTITUTION WAS SIGNED ON THIS DAY IN 1787. Delegations from 12 states (Rhode Island did not send a delegate) at the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia, Pa., voted unanimously to approve the proposed document. Thirty-nine of the 42 delegates present signed it, and the Convention adjourned, after drafting a letter of transmittal to the Congress. The proposed constitution stipulated that it would take effect when ratified by nine states.

WARREN BURGER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1907. A conservative on criminal matters, but a progressive on social issues, he had the longest tenure (1969–86) of any chief justice in the 20th century. Appointed by President Nixon, he voted in the majority on “Roe v. Wade” (1973), which upheld a woman’s right to an abortion, and on “US v. Nixon” (1974), which forced Nixon to surrender audiotapes to the Watergate special prosecutor. He died in 1995 in Washington, D.C.
