THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM WAS FOUGHT ON THIS DAY IN 1862. This date has been called America’s bloodiest day in recognition of the high casualties suffered in the Civil War battle between Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces and Gen. George McClellan’s Union army. Estimates vary, but more than 25,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed or wounded in this battle on the banks of the Potomac River in Maryland.
