NAPOLEON BONAPARTE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1769. The French emperor was born on the island of Corsica and reigned as emperor from 1804–1815. He died in exile on May 5, 1821, on the island of St. Helena.

JULIA CHILD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1912. America’s beloved food authority, who didn’t take a cooking lesson until she was in her 30s, was born in Pasadena, California. Child’s cookbooks and television shows (most famously, “The French Chef”) encouraged Americans to cook and eat well and to be skeptical of food fads and diet strictures. “Cooking is not a chore; it is a joy,” Child believed. She died in California in 2004.

SIR WALTER SCOTT WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1771. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the famed poet and novelist wrote, “But no one shall find me rowing against the stream,” in the introduction to “The Fortunes of Nigel,” continuing, “I care not who knows it — I write for the general amusement.” Scott died in Scotland in 1832.
