The Rundown

~FEDERAL SPENDING BILL’S EFFECTS ON BROOKLYN: With Congress finally hashing out a $1.3 trillion spending package Wednesday evening, Brooklyn and the New York City area are set to get some improvements that include security and transportation. Brooklyn U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan backed the Gateway project aspect of the bill that allocates funds to expand the Northeast Corridor rail connection between Newark and NYC. Donovan also applauded $630 million in Urban Areas Security Initiative grants for homeland security, calling it “sorely need to protect the world’s top terror target.” Additional money is also being dedicated to combat the opioid crisis. ~BROOKLYN NAVY YARD GETS NEW COO & EXECUTIVE VP: The Brooklyn Navy Yard announced the appointment of Michael Kelly to chief operating officer and executive vice president. The career-long architect joins the Brooklyn Navy Yard at a time when it plans to add 30,000 jobs and 5 million square feet of new manufacturing space. Kelly will be in charge of overseeing the yard’s operations and property management team. He has served in housing authorities across the country, starting out in San Francisco and serving twice as general manager of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) during his 30-year career. ~BROOKLYN’S NEW DISTRICT ATTORNEY CONTINUES PROMISE:Brooklyn’s new DA Eric Gonzalez is proving himself to be as progressive as he had promised while campaigning. This weekend he is off to Miami for a special forum on mental health issues and possible reforms. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~POST-WINTER STORM DAMAGE ASSESSED: Among the damage that can follow weather catastrophes: price gouging. NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman made public appearances to warn victims — and potential violators — following the sudden snow storm that hit New Yorkers on Wednesday. While clear weather came back quickly, the AG noted that unpredictable weather from climate changes could be an ongoing future issue, and he promoted a hotline for consumer complaints. EAGLE SPORTS: After using a pair of lock-down, fourth-quarter efforts to put together their first back-to-back wins in two months, the Brooklyn Nets needed yet another Wednesday night to make it three victories in a row for the first time this season.
