~IN TIME FOR VALENTINE’S DAY: BROOKLYN’S ULTIMATE CHOCOLATE TASTING TRAIL MAP: For more than a century, Brooklyn has been home to some of the city’s finest chocolatiers. Now, just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Brooklyn Chamber’s Explore Brooklyn tourism group has released its first Chocolate Tasting Trail Map. The self-guided tour brings chocolate pilgrims to a dozen local chocolatiers, factories and tasting rooms across the borough, from Sunset Park to GreenpointThe map includes addresses, websites, hours and the closest subway stations. Brooklyn has a long history of chocolate-making that began in the early 20th century, and New York City has been a major trading point for cocoa since the 1700s. Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan said the group hopes the map will encourage more people to explore the thriving industry. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~JENNIFER LAWRENCE DISCUSSES HOW TO ‘UNRIG THE SYSTEM’: The current political system in which Democrats and Republicans fight like cats and dogs and nothing gets done can be changed, but only if Americans are willing to roll up their sleeves and work on a grass-roots level to make those changes. That was the takeaway from a unique three-day conference called the “Unrig the System Summit” that was sponsored by the organization Represent Us and brought hundreds of political activists from communities across the country to New Orleans to talk about opening up the political process by changing campaign finance laws and making it easier for people to run for public office. The summit, which took place at Tulane University, featured a variety of speakers, including Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin), former Louisiana Gov.Buddy Roemer and Fox News Channel personality Steve Hilton(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN TO HOUSE CITY’S HIGHEST ROOFTOP POOL: When finished, the new luxury condo building Brooklyn Point in Downtown Brooklyn will feature the city’s highest rooftop pool. The high-flying oasis will feature mosaic glass tiles, lounge chairs, a Brazilian wood deck, trees, a stargazing observatory and room for open-air movie screenings around the 27-foot saltwater pool. Built as part of the City Point commercial and residential complex, the building at 138 Willoughby St. will boast the address 1 City Point. Brooklyn Point is set to be completed in early 2021 with 458 units from studios to three-bedrooms. It will be the borough’s tallest building until another tower at 9 DeKalb Ave. is raised. (via New York Post)

~RED APPLE GROUP PICKS UP APT. BUILDING BY BARCLAYS: The Red Apple Group, led by John Catsimatidis, recently picked up a newly developed apartment building by the Barclays Center for $69.2 million. The 86-unit structure at 670 Pacific St. was sold by Robert Wolf’s Read Property Group with a 90-spot parking garage leased to a parking operator for 15 years. Catsimatidis bought the space in a 1031 exchange with proceeds from the former Gristedes corporate headquarters in Manhattan. “I think we paid a little bit more than I really wanted to, but we had the ability to do that because of the 1031,” Catsimatidis said. “This reinforces our love for Brooklyn and our trust in the borough.” Red Apple Group is also planning to build a 425-unit, mixed-use project in Coney Island(via The Real Deal)

~IMMIGRATION RIGHTS ACTIVIST RAVI RAGBIR HONORED BY BISHOP OF LONG ISLAND DIOCESE: Ravidath Ragbir, the immigration rights leader who continues to face deportation, received the Bishop’s Cross on Sunday at Church of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights. Bishop Lawrence Provenzano surprised him and the gathering of parishioners, activists and guest clergy by naming Ragbir as Ecumenical Canon for Integration and declaring him an essential leader in the church. “We have children who are scared of deportation,” Ragbir said. “When you have children who are in school, crying because [they] don’t know whether their parents are going to be home when they get back home, they cannot work, they cannot study, they cannot focus, they cannot learn, because every day they are worried about their parents, about their lives.” The parish, which has been named as a Sanctuary Church, invited Ragbir to be the guest preacher at that service. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
