ON THIS DAY in 1918, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Hylan to Fight B.R.T. Through 2 Grand Juries.”

The article focused on the mayor at the time who was attempting to prove to district attorneys that there was indecent overcrowding in subway cars on the B.R.T.

“Mayor Hylan told a delegation of South Brooklyn citizens this afternoon he would collect legal and inconvertible evidence through the various departments of the city government to prove the indecent overcrowding of the B.R.T. lines, and turn it over to the district attorneys of Kings and New York counties…” the Eagle reported.
